In this workshop you will learn how to build your own sharpening kit (for on the go & a sanding block) and you learn how to sharpen your knives by hand. Through theory and practice you will gain a deeper understanding of steel, cutting edge and sharpening.

• Knife theory in general: steels, hardness, stability, utility

• outdoor knives and its functions, advantages and disadvantages

• what are the advantages of a convex edge? What does this mean in comparison to other cutting geometries?

• short comparison grinding techniques: the great advantage of a convex cutting edge

• construction of a sharpening set (leather pad single, sanding block with three sides leather, credit card sanding pad) made from naturally tanned Swiss leather and grinding paste

• training grinding technique(s) convex grinding

• help and control techniques

• study cutting edge under the microscope: what happens during the sharpening process

• questions about knives, cutting and sheaths

• testing knives

• (guided tour of OUTDOORWERK workshops)

Bring:

• your knife, if possible with convex edge or a OUTDOORWERK knife

• It is also possible to bring kitchen knives, scalpels and pocket knives.
